A convicted killer who broke out of a most maximum-security in New York jail some weeks back was shot dead by authorities the police said, as they keep on tracking his fellow escapee.
Richard Matt, 49, was eliminated in the upstate town of Malone, under 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the Canadian fringe, authorities said.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said authorities discovered Matt close to a cabin after he evidently had shot at a passing camper van.
“We were able to get into the cabin, where we discovered the smell of gunpowder and realized a weapon had been fired,” D’Amico told reporters.
“As we were doing the ground search in the area, there was movement detected by officers on the ground… A tactical team from Customs and Border Protection met up with Matt in the woods, challenged him, and he was shot dead by Border Patrol at that time.”
D’Amico said Matt’s fellow escaped killer, David Sweat, 35-year-old was still on the loose.
The men broke out of Clinton Correctional Facility, around 40 miles from Malone, on June 6 in a staggering, Hollywood-style jail break.
CNN reported that law enforcement are on the search for Sweat.
“There are several leads that are being tracked down as we speak about Mr Sweat and his possible whereabouts,” New York state Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters.
The prisoners used power tools to break out of their jail cells before day break on June 6, setting off an extreme weeks-long manhunt over the extremely lush encompassing zone.
Matt and Sweat utilized the power tools to slice through cell walls and creeped through channel pipes to emerge from a manhole in the village of Dannemora, home to the sprawling jail.
Matt, six feet (1.83 meters) tall with numerous tattoos, was serving a sentence of 25 years to life for the 1997 abducting and mutilating of his previous supervisor in a 27-hour experience. He fled to Mexico after the homicide and murdered another American there, before being sentenced to 20 years and removed back to New York.
Sweat was serving a lifelong incarceration without the chance for further appeal for killing a sheriff’s deputy in New York state in 2002 when he was 22.
Two jail wardens have been charged over the audacious breakout, and are suspected to have been sneaking devices and illicit things to the pair in burger meat.
The gutsy getaway started a gigantic pursuit including more than 1,100 staff assisted by sniffer dogs and helicopters to find the men, who had been seen in a few areas as of late in upstate New York.
